AsiaXpat started fast and never let up
AsiaXpat entered this game 1 point up on JOG Sportswear with 6 games remaining in the regular season. JOG recently gained points in the playoff race by beating VetiVa last week and climbing right back into the thick of things, so 2 more important points were in play.
However, it was not going to be a good day for JOG. On the first rush, Theo Wong moved past the JOG defense to shoot from the right faceoff dot which beat Carson Leung (JOG LPP) clean on the blocker side to open the scoring. On the next faceoff, Xpat’s big guns swarmed the net and almost scored from the scrum with the puck just sitting on the goal line. Shortly after, Justin Wong doubled up from a Theo Wong pass as he fired it short side. 2-0. Halfway thru the first, David Finifter bangs in a rebound after a Jerry Tian shot from the slot. 3-0 after the 1st period.
The pressure continued in the 2nd, as everyone was looking to the right, Finifter cut behind the D from the right side for a breakaway that Leung stopped, but Jason Wong was there to poke the loose puck in to make it 4-0. 4 minutes later, an errant centering pass in front from behind Xpat’s net leads to a 1 on 2 break as Theo beats the defense and cut across the front of net to score on the open side. 5-0. This is followed by Finifter taking a pass from the middle of blueline, walking in 3 steps, and then wired it top corner glove for his 2nd of the night. 6-0, and they weren’t finished. On the next shift, Justin Wong took it to the left corner and tried centering to Theo Wong in the slot, but as he was tied up, the puck found its way to the other side where Felix Lee was there to one-time the puck past Leung for his first of the season. Theo completed his hat trick with 4 seconds remaining in the 2nd to close out the second period 8-0.
In the 3rd, Xpat sat back a bit and on the powerplay, JOG was able to break Martin Jim’s shutout bid with a powerplay goal as Alex Ng put in a rebound after his dad, ET Ng, took the initial shot to complete the scoring.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 12 shots on a light workday, while Carson Leung (JOG
Sportswear LPP) faced 31 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Justin Wong (AsiaXpat)
2. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
3. David Finifter (AsiaXpat)
Young Guns come from behind to stun VetiVa in overtime
VetiVa looked to be in tough against top-ranked Young Guns this week. VetiVa needs every point they can get to stay in the playoff race while Young Guns have a nice cushion at the top.
It took almost half a period before anyone could convert. This was not to say there weren’t any chances, though. Young Guns had numerous chances but were either stopped by Nicholas Sellars or Sellars' best friend his post! It was Ray Tang to open the scoring for VetiVa after a nice three-way play from Art Tam to Jason Yip, and down to Ray Tang on goal line who then slid out and put it thru the 5 hole. Just a couple minutes later, Danny Chiu tied it when he banged home the rebound off an Eric Pang shot to the net. Late in the period, Art Tam pounced on a Paul Chai rebound and fired it past a screened Cameron Chiu. 2-1 for VetiVa after 1 period.
Not long into the 2nd period, it was Chiu again, right place at the right time as he found the loose puck behind Sellars and helped it past the line to tie the game once again. VetiVa was throwing everything at the net and it worked! First Robert Chiu continued his scoring streak when he poked in another rebound, followed by Josh Steinhaus tipping in a pass from Jimmy Lee to make it 4-2. But before the end of the period, it was Chiu once again, this time a hard snapshot in the low circle thru the 5-hole to complete his hat-trick. 4-3 after 2 periods.
It was looking like VetiVa might be able to hold out but with just under 5 minutes to go, a failed clearance turned into a powerplay for Young Guns. Luca Loi-Faita making no mistake with a wrister from the point past a number of bodies and the screened Sellars to tie the game 4-4. With 1:26 left in the period, after another failed breakout from VetiVa, Yaann Yuen roofed the puck short side top corner to give Young Guns their first lead in the game 5-4. On the ensuing faceoff, VetiVa pulled their goalie, and just 20 seconds later, Art Tam poked in the tying goal after Jason Yip was able to pound the puck thru Cameron’s pads to tie the game at 5.
In overtime, Young Guns pressure thru the most of overtime ultimately forced a penalty and on the ensuing powerplay, Luca Loi-Faita was able to score top corner
glove side with only 7 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the comeback.
Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 22 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 19 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Luca Loi-Faita (Young Guns)
2. Danny Chiu (Young Guns)
3. Arthur Tam (VetiVa)
RBC gets past Unicorns with some timely saves and a solid team defense
RBC has been one of the top-scoring teams so far this season, while the Unicorns have been one of the better team defenses. Which storyline were we going to see tonight?
It only took 18 seconds for RBC to capitalize on their first powerplay as Scott Strickland made a great pass up the middle to a streaking Warren Ang who walked in on goal and deked past Arthur Chan for the first goal. Midway in the period, Andrew Rueger responded for Unicorns to tie the game, after receiving a breakout pass for a breakaway from the far blueline and blistering a shot past Nick Sellars' (RBC LPP) glove into the top corner to tie the game. This was short-lived though as on the ensuing faceoff, Arthur Tam skated the puck into the zone, behind the net, and then fed a wide-open Ang in front of the net to one time it far side past Chan for his 2nd of the night and restoring RBC’s 1 goal lead to close out the first period.
In the 2nd, Unicorns got into penalty trouble midway in the period as RBC ended up with a 5 on 3. Scott Strickland scored on the powerplay to make it 3-1. Unicorns fought off the remaining 2 man advantage, but Ang completed his hattrick with just 4 seconds remaining in the period as he put in another scramble in front of Chan. 4-1 RBC after 2 periods.
The third period continued with RBC outshooting Unicorns 12-4, with Leon Mo and Bruce Hicks scoring for RBC, and the only reply from Unicorns being Rick Chu on the powerplay as he skated wide past RBC’s D on the right and did a power move into the middle to chip it by Sellars on the far post. Although the shots against RBC were low, Sellars had some amazing savings stopping one-timers from Andrew Rueger and Tracy Wong to help RBC maintain their lead midway in the
2nd, otherwise the game might have looked very different.
Nicholas Sellars (RBC LPP) faced 12 shots, while Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 28 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Warren Ang (RBC Lions)
2. Arthur Chan (Unicorns)
3. Leon Mo (RBC Lions)
