Division 3 Scoreboard - Week 2
October 25th, 2024
Going the distance
JOG Sportswear were looking for a bounce-back game after being shutout the week before by the Young Guns team, while Unicorns were looking to build on their convincing opening night win over VetiVa.
In a very evenly played period, only Unicorns captain, David Lee, was able to score with 5 minutes remaining in the first.
The 2nd period saw more offense as both teams found the net, first with Andrew Rueger for Unicorns before Paul Kim replied for JOG shortly after. Getting into penalty trouble, JOG was made to pay by birthday boy Alvin Sham continuing his scoring streak on the powerplay. 3-1 Unicorns before Hugo Fan scored unassisted, followed by Kim with his 2nd of the night to even the score 3-3 at the end of the 2nd.
In the third, Sham also scored his 2nd of the night just 34 seconds into the period, followed a minute later by Rick Chu giving the insurance marker for Unicorns, 5-3. With the game looking to wind down with just over a minute left, Hugo Fan does an end-to-end rush, getting all the way into the slot before getting the puck knocked off his stick only to have Donald Chow follow up the loose puck and putting it top corner blocker side to get within 1.
With the net empty - JOG poured the pressure on and was rewarded 30 seconds later as Paul Kim bangs a loose puck in past a sprawled Arthur Chan to tie the game up!
3 on 3 overtime was exciting as both teams took advantage of the no icing & no offsides rule and it was end to end, but both goalies stood up well forcing the first shootout this year.
In the shootout, Andrew Rueger scored for Unicorns, but Anthony Luk & Donald Chow scored for JOG giving JOG the shootout come-from-behind win.
Carson Leung (JOG-LPP) faced 18 shots while Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 22 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Donald Chow (JOG Sportswear)
2. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
3. Paul Kim (JOG Sportswear)
Finding Theo
After opening the season missing their top scorer most of the game, AsiaXpat had a full-line up to start the 2nd game and hoping this would make a difference, while Young Guns are coming off a convincing shutout win last week over JOG.
And it showed, Theo Wong only needed 32 seconds to open the scoring after a nice play from Justin Wong and Gavino Ng. Midway in the first, Young Guns Andre Chan was able to make AsiaXpat pay for a penalty with a powerplay goal to even up the score, followed shortly by Yaann Yuen also with her first of the year.
While the Young Guns had more of the play in the 2nd, the 2 teams exchanged goals, Gavino Ng for Xpat and Jhonny Leung for Young Guns. 3-2 Young Guns after 2.
The 3rd period was exciting as Theo Wong scored 2 goals in a 1.5-minute span to give Xpat the 4-3 lead only to see Andre Chan tie it up shortly after. After many opportunities on both sides, Calix Ma scored with 28 seconds left to give Young Guns a 5-4 lead at a critical time. As the crowd were writing Xpat off, Theo Wong got his 4th of the night tying the game 5-5 with just 10 seconds left and giving us the 2nd OT in as many games tonight.
In overtime, Arry Leung (LPP) was able to put one by a screened Martin Jim to give Young Guns the victory and extend their win streak to 2 games.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 26 shots while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) faced 21 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Andre Chan (Young Guns)
2. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
3. Yaann Yuen (Young Guns)
Opening season struggles
RBC Lions were looking to join Young Guns to stay atop of the early season standings after an easy win last week over AsiaXpat, while VetiVa were exploring how they can do a better job on defense while creating some more offense after a lackluster opening game.
RBC was seeing the debut of top winger Scott Strickland in the lineup after missing the opening game, while VetiVa also saw the debut of Stephen Levac. Both of whom did not disappoint tonight.
It was Strickland who opened the scoring with about 5 minutes left in the first on an
unassisted marker and as VetiVa eased up toward the end of the period, Leon Mo walked thru the defense right up the middle and deked out Nicholas Sellars with just 6 seconds left to double RBC’s lead after 1.
Paul Chai got his 2nd of the year on the powerplay from a nice feed from Levac before Gary Lawrence responded on the next shift. A couple minutes later, Levac scored to pull VetiVa back within 1 against the run of play. 3-2 after 2 periods.
In the 3rd, Lawrence scored his 2nd of the night to restore RBC's 2-goal lead, and while Robert Chiu was able to one-time a nice feed from Jason Yip in the slot beating Grant Phillips, RBC capped off the night with another shot from the point past a completed screened Sellars who had no chance as the puck sailed into the top corner past 5 bodies.
VetiVa will need to go back to the drawing board after making several line changes over the game and see how they can give their goalie a better chance - first game facing a ton of breakaways, while 2nd game, creating a screen on him most of the night, while RBC stays at the top of the league with Young Guns.
An overworked Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 26 shots while Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) faced 15 shots for the win.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Gary Lawrence (RBC Lions)
2. Leon Mo (RBC Lions)
3. Nickolas Sellars (Young Guns)
