Good bounces go VetiVa’s way past AsiaXpat for a 3-2 win
Last time these teams met, AsiaXpat ran away with a convincing 6-2 win. Xpat were hoping for a continuation, while VetiVa were looking to stop Theo Wong from doing too much damage.
The game started even until Justin Wong fired a one-timer past Grant Phillips (VetiVa LPP) after Theo Wong pulled all the D to the left of the net and slid a perfect pass to Justin to finish it off. They had a similar play later in the period, but David Finifter was unable to latch on to the centering pass or he would have also had a gapping net in front of him.
In the 2nd, Xpat continued to try the same play, but instead of passing across, Wong dropped it in the slot where Constant Au made no mistake with the empty net to make it 2-0 Xpat. On the other end, VetiVa were generating good chances, but were being thwarted by Martin Jim, back after missing the last couple games. It wasn’t until late in the 2nd, that Rob Chiu fired another clapper after 2 Xpat defenders skated by him, that beat Jim blocker side to make it 2-1.
VetiVa started the 3rd with a powerplay, and after many chances, Tracy Wong (LPP) fired bomb from the left point that Chiu was able to tip by Jim to tie the game. 2-2. Halfway thru the 3rd, Stephen Levac, broke up a play in his own end, and proceeded to skate hard up the right side, past the Xpat D and wired a shot far side to give VetiVa the lead. The last few minutes of the game was frantic as Xpat pulled their goalie and created a ton of good chances only to have Phillips holding the fort for a 3-2 VetiVa win.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 23 shots while Grant Phillips (VetiVa - LPP) faced 25 shots.
With the win, VetiVa vaults over Xpat into 3rd spot, with only 3 points separating the bottom 4 teams.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Robert Chiu (VetiVa)
2. Grant Phillips (VetiVa)
3. Martin Jim (AsiaXpat)
RBC withstands JOG’s early pressure to a 4-1 win
Both teams were missing some key players this game. Would the replacements change the outcome? Last time RBC ran away with a 7-1 win.
It looked very different this game as JOG was all over RBC and peppering them with shots and takeaways in the opening period. RBC looked slow to start the game and were on their heels. And thru the first a most of the 2nd period, this continued, however Grand Phillips was there to stop any opportunity JOG could muster.
When JOG took an early penalty in the 2nd, Leon Mo made them pay with a end to end rush capped off with a shot thru the 5-hole of Stephanie Fok to take the lead. JOG continued to take the play to RBC only to be stopped by Phillips and near the end of the 2nd, Mo once again went end to end with a 5-hole finish to make it 2-0.
At the start of the 3rd, Yaann Yuen (JOG LPP) finally was able to solve Phillips as she fired it top corner after stealing puck on the left side and cut into the middle. Unfortunately for JOG, RBC came back shortly as Rob Chiu (RBC LPP) cleaned up a rebound to regain a 2-goal lead. With 7 minutes left, Art Tam (RBC LPP) sprung Mo who had a break from left side, this time cutting across the net and out waited Fok to put into far side to complete his hattrick and round out the scoring. 4-1 win for RBC.
Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) faced 28 shots against, while Stephanie Fok (JOG Sportswear) received 17 shots.
RBC’s win put them temporarily tied for first ahead of the Young Guns game later that evening.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Grant Phillips (RBC)
2. Leon Mo (RBC)
3. Bonnie Lui (RBC)
Young Guns hold off Unicorns in another close game
Unicorns and Young Guns were the last game before the holiday break. The Unicorns seem to give Young Guns trouble. Last game, Unicorns held Young Guns to 2 goals and were looking to do the same this time.
And it started off well with Andrew Rueger opening the scoring with a snapshot from the blueline while surrounded by Young Gun players finding the left post and in. 1-0 Unicorns. Unicorns were all over Young Guns early in the game as on the ensuing play, they hit a cross bar, another post, and another post as they kept the kids hemmed in their own zone. Young Guns finally scored when the "Dad line" led by Danny Chiu replied as he deflected Andy Ma’s point shot past Arthur Chan to tie the game. Late in the period, Calix Ma fired one past Chan to take the lead. 2-1 Young Guns after 1.
Mid way in the 2nd, Rueger scored his 2nd of the night from his rear, as he pops in the rebound after Sally Lau almost scored from a Dominic Ng pass. Yaann Yuen with a sweet goal, skating down the left side and scoring far side top corner close in to regain the lead. On the next shift, Danny Chiu doubles down with his 2nd of the night. 3 goals in a 1.5-minute span. Late in the 2nd, Unicorns capitalized on a powerplay as Leon Mo (Unicorns LPP) one timed a slapshot past Cameron Chiu from the lower right circle on a nice play with Nathan Chow and Tracy Wong to draw it back to 4-3 to close the 2nd.
Early in the 3rd, Calix Ma scored his 2nd to give Young Guns some breathing room again, but shortly after, Rueger with an unassisted hattrick goal, as he wired one past Chiu. The teams exchanged chances for the remainder of the game, but there were no further goals. 5-4 final for Young Guns.
Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 33 shots, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) faced 18 shots.
With the win, Young Guns regain their position at the top of the standings, while JOG sits at the bottom just 1 point away from AsiaXpat and Unicorns.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Danny Chiu (Young Guns)
2. Andrew Rueger (Unicorns)
