AsiaXpat wins critical game over short-handed Unicorns to secure playoff spot
A must-win game between Unicorns and AsiaXpat this week. An Xpat win would secure their playoff spot, while a Unicorns win would drive the race to the last game of the season.
However, it did not start well for the Unicorns, as both of their top players, Alvin Sham and Andrew Rueger were unable to dress. Missing these key players really showed as Xpat could sense it and went in for the kill. Xpat controlled the play from the start and after 4 minutes scored their first from the league's leading scorer, Theo Wong. This was followed closely by a 2nd by Wong Cheung just over a minute later, after getting a great pass from David Finifter. Unicorns Tracy Wong did all she could to pull one back in the next shift to keep it close at 2-1, but in the last few minutes, while the Unicorns powerplay had a chance to even the score, AsiaXpat blew it open with two short-handed goals. The first from Jerry Tian (scoring in consecutive games) after being fed by Finifter, and the 2nd from Gavino Ng just a minute later to give Xpat a 4-1 lead after the first.
The second period continued like the first as Xpat dominated zone time while keeping any Unicorns shots well to the outside. However, the only goal of the period was from Theo Wong with his 2nd after a nice feed by Justin Wong to free him. 5-1 after 2 periods.
The third period was more of the same, and Xpat played a bit more defensively with a 4-goal cushion. Chris Lam was able to get one back for Unicorns off a play with Nathan Chow and John Wade, but no further goals, AsiaXpat secures their spot.
Grant Phillips (Unicorns-LPP) faced 30 shots, while Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 16 shots against.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
2. David Finifter (AsiaXpat)
3. Tracy Wong (Unicorns)
A spirited game between JOG and VetiVa provides a worthy game for the final playoff spot
This was a critical game for both VetiVa and JOG. A win for VetiVa would mean making the playoffs as their remaining game is against Young Guns where they’ve not had much luck all season, and for JOG, they needed to win to avoid elimination.
And the game play reflected the importance as both teams were playing tight defensively. It wasn’t until the last 5 minutes of the first period, did JOG break the ice with an unassuming play after a Donald Chow shot that deflected into the corner which landed on the stick of Alan Lui off to the right of the net near the goal line. He tried to fire it back in front of the net, but the puck deflected off a VetiVa stick and into the air, only to land behind Cameron Chiu (VetiVa LPP) and into the net. 1-0 JOG after the first.
Just 20 seconds into the 2nd period, VetiVa equalized after Art Tam centered a pass from behind the net to Paul Chai in the slot who ripped on glove side top corner on Jerry Tian (JOG LPP) to tie the game. VetiVa started to show more momentum after that goal and although swarmed the JOG zone, could not get it by Tian. Then against the run of play, Hugo Fan wins the puck in the VetiVa corner and puts a beautiful pass to Jimmy Thai wide open on the left faceoff dot, who then puts a perfect short side over the pad and under the
blocker to regain the lead for JOG. 2-1 after 2 periods.
4 minutes into the 3rd period, Tam passed to Justin Kuok on the point who then ripped a slapshot past Tian to tie the game again. As time was running down in the 3rd period, VetiVa during another powerplay, Kuok scored his 2nd of the night as he picked off a pass, skated in, and fired one against the grain past Tian to give VetiVa their first lead with just over 4 minutes remaining. In desperation, JOG pulled the goalie with 2 minutes to go, and Hugo Fan lasers a shot from the left-wing glove side top corner to tie the game!
Overtime resolved nothing and into the shootout we went. Chai had the first attempt, and he put it off the post and in. Chiu and Tian then shut the door on the remaining shooters giving VetiVa the shootout win and securing their place in the playoffs.
Jerry Tian (JOG LPP) faced 18 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (VetiVa LPP) received 22 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Paul Chai (VetiVa)
2. Cameron Chiu (VetiVa LPP)
3. Jerry Tian (JOG Sportswear LPP)
Potential playoff preview between Young Guns and RBC
This game was more of an exhibition game as both teams were missing key players. RBC was missing Leon Mo, Mark Pavey, and Gary Lawrence, while Young Guns were missing their entire first line of Calix Ma, Yaann Yuen, Izzac Chan, Eric Pang, and Luca Loi-Faita.
Having said that, this was still an entertaining game as both teams went on the attack. Only 1 goal in the first period, as Andre Chan and Nate Brocklehurst (YG LPP) went on a rare 2 on 1, Andre passes from the right side to Nate as he waited for Grant Phillips to slide across before shooting over him to make it 1-0 after 1.
Early in the 2nd, Bruce Hicks finished a play from Shane Weir with a slick backhand thru Cameron Chiu’s pads, that just makes it past the goal line to tie it at 1. It wasn’t until half way in the 2nd, that Brocklehurst found Art Tam (YG LPP) on a 2 on 1, as Tam made no mistake and found the top corner blocker side on Phillips to give Young Guns a 2-1 lead after 2 periods.
Early in the 3rd, Tam wins a puck behind the net and frees it out to the left side of the net where Christopher Lee pulls it out in front of the goal line and finds a hole short side past Phillips to make it 3-1. Midway in the 3rd, Danny Chiu puts in a rebound after a mad scramble in front of the RBC goal to give the Guns a 4-1 buffer. On the next play, Jasper Chow intercepts an errant Young Guns defensive pass up the middle from their own corner and walks into shot, past Chiu, post and in to give RBC some hope with 7 minutes remaining.
However, Chiu shut the door and 4-2 was the final for Young Guns.
Grant Phillips (RBC) faced 19 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 26 shots against.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Christopher Lee (Young Guns)
2. Cameron Chiu (Young Guns)
3. Danny Chiu (Young Guns)
